Over the past two weeks all drafts of Year 4 visited the Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre. The activities students participated in related to the work they are doing in Studies of Society and the Environment in the classroom. They had an opportunity to board the river trawler “Educat” and participate in the onboard operations. A “mangrove experience” allowed them to get into the mud and explore the wetlands eco system including plant and animal life. This is Jamie’s recount of the visit: “On Monday 30 April 4W went to Jacob’s Well. We were all ready for it. We got to the bus and off we went. It took us a long time to get there. Eventually we made it and we got off the bus. Glenda and Glen, the staff, told us what we had to do. So we got on a boat to go to Woogoompah Island. We sorted ourselves into two groups. One group went on the boat while the others went on an environmental walk through the mangroves. When group one got on the boat we swapped over. On the boat we set out the net and when we pulled it up we caught four sting rays, five tiger prawns, one hundred jelly fish, one hundred glass herrings, one flounder, two skids and a couple of crabs. We got to fish them out with our hands but we had gloves on. Bailey caught one big sand crab and I caught a squid. We had a fantastic day.” |
